The summer of U2 has come to a close with a total of five shows for me: Dublin x2, Boston, DC, and Charlottesville. Maybe next year I can catch a few more shows, because it'm sure I'll be going through some withdrawal not being able to see U2 live. Great times traveling, excellent setlists, and amazing shows! After three months of hard work, XPilot for the iPhone is available in the App Store! My old friend and college roommate Sean and I formed a little side company called 7b5 Labs. We ported the old networked space game XPilot to the iPhone, and Apple just approved it for sale. We'll see what happens, but I'm pretty satisfied with just learning iPhone development and going through the process of setting up a Developer account with Apple (it seemed at times that was almost more difficult that the coding itself). update 2009.08.01: Version 1.1 is now available. I suppose it's the Mecca-equivalent for U2 fans: seeing them perform live in their hometown. So that's what I get to do in July as I travel to Dublin for the U2360 tour. This will be my 12th time seeing them live, and I'm expecting nothing short of a brilliant time! The new album rocks, by the way. update 2009.04.06: I'll be at two shows in Dublin (July 24, 25), and two back in the states (Charlottesville, VA and DC). [360.u2.com]

On March 2nd U2 will be releasing their new album! It's only been over FOUR YEARS since their last - not that I'm impatient or anything. Here's hoping for another great one from them. The album will be titled No Line On The Horizon and will be available in five different release formats (including books, DVDs, etc, etc). Time to start saving up for the tour. [www.u2.com]

Well, tomorrow's the big day, where people in the United States think they are being all democratic by voting based on nothing more than sound bites, attack ads, and soothing words of a demagogue. In some small way I wish we could be visited by zombie Jefferson and Madison to give us a collective slap in the face so we wake up to the laughable situation we're in as a republic. A democracy only works when the voting citizenry is educated. In other words, have actually read the Constitution that sets up and restricts the power of the Federal government. We've slowly traded away our freedoms for more government control, and the next four years will only see that getting much worse, no matter which of the two major candidates find their way into office. I'm certainly not an optimistic person by nature, but I'm feeling downright hopeless for the United States of America.

The Large Hadron Collider recently had a successful test of its proton beam, and the first collisions will probably start in October. I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opening day at a 12:01 midnight showing. I'll try to avoid spoilers, but be forewarned some hints may be given. I've been a huge fan since 1981, right along side my Star Wars fascination. As a kid I would swing on my whip in a tree in the backyard, want to find a perfect fedora, and basically loved everything about the Indiana Jones mythos, so it was with much anticipation that I went to see the new film; after all it's been 19 years since the third installment. Having read some the of the plot details beforehand, I realized that Lucas was taking the story into 1957, which also meant taking the film style away from the 30's adventure serials of the first three into a new era with the Red Scare, the atomic bomb, and all sorts of new science fiction mysteries. Given this, I loved the movie. Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf did amazing jobs (Mutt's lines were some of the best - particularly early on in his introduction), and I really enjoyed the production of this film. There were some silly points, sure, but so were there in all the films. The script was a bit weak in parts, but the story was great for the era, the characters were fun to watch, and the sets/production were exceptional. The editing was tight (especially in the jungle jeep chase). I'll be going back to watch it again shortly, but my initial review is that it's a 3.5 out of 5. I think it fits with the rest of the movies, but is sufficiently different to make it impossible to rank (kinda like Temple of Doom). [indianajones.com]

Nine Inch Nails released a new album Ghosts I-IV. What's interesting about this collection of 36 instrumental tracks is not so much the music itself (which is fantastic), but the method of distribution. Trent Reznor recently split with his record label, so this new album is being released online and in CD format, with the first 9 tracks available for free. He even uploaded them to torrent sites himself. If you want to buy all the tracks you can get them in DRM-free MP3, flac, or Apple lossless formats for only $5. If this doesn't scare the record labels, I don't know what will. It's obvious that the RIAA and the old model of music distribution is dead. There's also a $10 option to download files and get physical CDs, along with a $75 and $300 set of deluxe formats (printed book, blu-ray, etc). I've been a fan for a while, and this just takes it up a notch. [ghosts.nin.com]

After watching the incredible documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, I've gotten back into playing Donkey Kong on the MAME arcade at work. The perfect game? Close. It's pretty addictive, that's for sure. The documentary follows Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell as rivals for the world record score in Donkey Kong (currently held by Mitchell with 1,050,200). My top score right now is 29,000, so I have quite a way to go as I try to master this incredibly difficult game from 1981. Update 2008.01.30: My new high score is 58,600!

<rant>The Republican debates last night just go to show, on so many levels, how broken the entire system is. First, CNN has apparently decided that Romney and Guiliani are the only candidates they want, since they got 95% of the air time. Second, the questions were so stupid and vacuuous that they did nothing but enforce the notion that politicians need not reply with substance, but just say what the morons want to hear. Third, the only candidate that has any hope of fixing our country was marginalized and ignored because the media is scared of him. When you look at the issues that actually matter, Ron Paul is the only hope for our country, but I'm afraid the general population doesn't want to realize it because it means upsetting the apple cart. </rant> [ronpaul2008.com]

The most anticipated game for the Nintendo Wii has been released today! Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is the game that I've been looking forward to ever since I got the Wii last year. This is a continuation of the first two in the Prime series which were released on the Gamecube - taking the epic 2D adventure platformer into the 3D realm. This newest addition to the Metroid franchise takes advantage of the Wii controls using the remote to aim while the analog stick moves Samus around. I still remember in 1986 paying the original Metroid on my NES and being quite frightened while battling the final boss at midnight in a dark room. The whole series has been a brilliant use of mystery, adventure, music, and mood, and it looks like the last entry into the series will be best ever. Here's to a week of Metroid on my big screen! Today marks the 30-year anniversary of Star Wars. The film pretty much defined my childhood with its mesmerizing imagery and timeless story. Yeah, I had all the action figures (still do!). So, for anyone else who is now in their thirties and grew up with these films, take a moment this weekend to watch the original and wonder at how a film like that could have been made for $15mil or so, with a group of no-name actors and a director that just finished a movie about 60's cruising culture in Northern California... not to mention having to form Industrial Light and Magic to create special effects that had never been done before. So, forget about episodes 1-3. Forget about the revisions made to the 'special editions'. Just watch the original and enjoy it as it was meant to be.

Traveled up to Pittsburgh this past weekend for CMU's annual Spring Carnival. A lot of alumni come back to enjoy the fun on campus with the midway rides, booths, and sweepstakes (buggy). The weather was absolutely perfect, which is unusual for Pittsburgh: sunny, warm, and not a cloud in the sky.

If anyone had any remaining doubts that the music industry is completely self-destructing, I hope you were able to catch the Grammy Awards last night. What a horror show (and that's apart from the fact that half of it was made up of commercials). And the music execs wonder why album sales are down? The prime example was the performance of Lionel Ritchie. What a talented performer. He did an excellent job of performing a fantastic song. That was then following by a complete train wreck of something that I guess some people call music, but for me it was just a study in how low the industry has bottomed out. I don't even remember the clown's name, but I certainly don't consider what came from him "music". It was insulting to me as someone who even claims to enjoy music. Can we please get back to rewarding and promoting talented musicians?

The Nintendo Wii was just released, and being the Nintendo fanboy that I am, I got one on release day. The machine is surprisingly small, and it looks like a lot of Apple design style was worked into it. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is a fantastic game and looks like it'll be one of the best launch titles ever. [www.wii.com]

I went to a fantastic Death Cab For Cutie concert here in D.C. last night. The production was very simple, and they did an excellent job of recreating the studio sound on stage. They were heavy on the tracks from their latest "Plans" and the popular "Transatlanticism", but performed a few from their first album, too. Overall a great show. Update: As an added bonus today there was a leak of the new U2 single Window In The Skies from the upcoming U2 18 Singles best-of disc. You can grab an MP3 of it here.

Ok, now I'm getting mad at all this political correctness gone insane. The Pope cites historical documents and mentions that Islam has had associated with it a history of violence. The Muslims, in a clear, thought-out, and proportioned response, declare that the Pope must die in a fire. Doesn't anyone see the irony here? [www.thisislondon.co.uk]

It's getting closer... October 6th. Episode one of the third season of Battlestar Galactica. Yeah, I keep going on about this show, but it's that good. I've been waiting all spring and summer for the new season after a cliffhanger that was positively unfair to viewers. One month to go, and in the meantime we have the release of the second half of season 2 on DVD, and the start of a series of web-only shorts available on scifi.com. [www.scifi.com]

Work's been absolutely crazy, so not much time to update anything interesting here. Some small items of note during the past month: Italy won the World Cup. Switched to DirecTV to get HD channels (with associated improvements in my myth box). Learning about wireless hacking. Ambient lounge/techno is the music of choice. It's been way too hot. Waiting until October for new Battlestar episodes is difficult. That is all. [www.zombo.com]

Yesterday was the big election day here in Herndon, VA. In a somewhat shocking victory, the mayor and more liberal town council members were thrown out, with a new mayor and 4 new conservative council members. The hot issue was of course the day labor site, and the fact that taxpayer dollars were going to support illegal immigrants. This vote yesterday shows that we're not going to take it anymore. Go Herndon! [www.town.herndon.va.us]

2006.03.11

Last night saw the season finale of season 2 of Battlestar Galactica. Again, Moore and Eick prove that they will simply not do what normal show writers do; nothing is neatly wrapped up, nothing is predictable, and the dark side of human nature is expertly explored. Last night's episode was 90 minutes long, and it was very well directed and edited because so much happened for just an hour and a half, with the last five minutes being just spectacular. Without giving too much away for those who missed it, season three is going to be very interesting. So much fundamentally changed that I have absolutely no idea where they are going. And to me that's the hallmark of an excellent show. Now to wait patiently until the October season 3 premiere... [scifi.com]

I've been with Verizon Wireless for my cell phone carrier for almost three years, so they give you a little credit for buying a new phone if you want to... so I got a new RAZR v3c. It has a cool look, has bluetooth so it can connect to my Mac, and weighs almost nothing. So what did I do just two hours after getting the phone? Hacked it with a USB cable connection and a hex editor to change some things I didn't like about the interface. Much better. Yeah, I'm a geek. [www.howardforums.com]

If you know me well then you know I'm a bit of a coffee geek. Coffee snob, perhaps? But actually my real passion is espresso, and I really don't drink a lot of drip coffee. With my new Rancilio Silvia my espresso hobby has certainly gone up a few notches, and I'm now constantly researching, practicing, and failing to get that perfect shot. It's one of those unattainable goals that keeps you going in any hobby. But it's the process that's the fun part, not necessarily the end state. [www.coffeegeek.com]

As the second half of season two of Battlestar Galactica draws near, there's a lot of news appearing related to the series. First off, the season 2.0 (first 10 episodes of season 2) DVDs were released on 12.20. Second, there is a Sci-Fi preview of Battlestar Galactica Season 2 available as a free video download for iTunes. And third, the second half kicks off on January 6th at 10pm on Sci-Fi with the episode Resurrection Ship, Part 1. You only have two weeks to catch up with the DVDs if you haven't been watching! The new Nintendo DS game Mario Kart DS was released on November 22nd. This is the first game on the DS that uses the Nintendo WiFi network; a free online gaming network letting you connect your DS to other players around the world with any WiFi (802.11b/g) network. The game is seriously addicting. You can keep track of stats online and race against people all over the world. If you have a DS, you simply have to get Mario Kart. [www.nintendo.com]

Finally the circle is complete. So I have this Linux-based PVR software that I use to record and watch TV shows. I also just got a new iPod which can play video files. Thanks to a new project called myth2ipod, I can schedule recordings to be automatically downloaded onto my iPod so I can watch them on the go. A perfect convergence of various technologies.

Of course I went to the U2 show last night, and will be going to the show tonight, too. Great show, as I expected it would be. Similar in structure to the shows I saw up in Boston back in May, with a few changes. Fewer 'Achtung Baby' songs, and more from 'All That You Can't Leave Behind'. Highlights were definitely the acoustic 'The First Time' (from Zooropa) and 'Stuck In A Moment That You Can't Get Out Of' with Larry and Adam joining in right at the end (if you saw the performance on Late Night With Conan O'Brien it was like that). The crowd wasn't really into the new songs, and of course went wild for the standard singles, so that kinda bugged me. If you haven't seen a live U2 show, you're really missing out! update: The 10.20 show was better, in my opinion. The crowd and the band both seemed more lively. [u2tours.com]

2005.10.05

Ok, so I'm a fan of all things NASA. I happen to think they are some of the brightest people in this country. My dream job has always been to work there. But I had never seen the HBO miniseries that came out a while ago entitled "From The Earth To The Moon". The new DVD set just came out, and I finally watched all twelve episodes. It really is spectacular work. But it left me with mixed feelings; intense awe and respect for the space program of the past, but combine that with depression about the current state of affairs. We've completely lost our desire to explore and learn.

2005.09.25

The second season of Battlestar Galactica just reached the halfway mark with a mid-season finale. Unfortunately, the second half won't pick up again until January 2006. Now is the perfect time to watch season one which just came out on DVD. The set also includes the mini-series which started it all. This show really is the best television on right now. The writing, directing, casting, editing all are simply brilliant. I can't recommend this series any more highly. [scifi.com]

So there's been a lot of talk around the net about installing OS X on generic Intel machines. I've resisted for a while, but last night I just had to try it out. I got it working on a Dell Precision 360 that we had at work. I used the Ubuntu Live CD to transfer the install image to the disk. To the right is a screenshot taken on the Dell, and you can see it actually is a Pentium 4. The sound still doesn't work, and the monitor only does 1024x768, but other than that it's running very smoothly. [osx86project.org]

There may be some interruption in stealthboy.com as some changes are being made... These pages will be moved to a temporary server, then moved back after a week or so. There may be some times when things are not available. Just FYI.

I finally upgraded my PowerBook G4 to the newest operating system release from Apple: OS X 10.4 Tiger. The dashboard widgets are pretty cool. The whole thing feels a lot snappier in general, too. Haven't really tried out spotlight or automator yet, but I'm sure I'll get around to it when I have some more time to play. [apple.com]

2005.05.27

Just got back from a great trip to Boston. Well, the weather was a little questionable (rainy, windy, cold the entire time), but the time spent there was excellent. There was great food in the North End (Italian), shopping on Newbury St, and an unknown little Irish band called U2 performed two shows that I attended while there. For my mini reviews of the U2 shows, click here (Tuesday night 5/24) and here (Thursday night 5/26).

2005.05.08

Well, been a while without an update. I've been swamped. Work is crazy as always. Combine that with the U2 tour in full swing (which of course means cd trading), and the fact that I got a new toy, pictured right. I'm also getting ready for a trip to Boston to see two U2 concerts. May is turning out to be a busy month!

2005.03.29

U2's Vertigo world tour opened last night in San Diego. Thanks to the wonder that is the Internet, 12 hours after the show ended I'm listening to a 2CD set of the show. They put in quite a few tracks from Boy, and Bullet the Blue Sky / Running to Stand Still sounded much more like their Joshua Tree originals. The full setlist can be seen here. All the tracks from their new album sounded fantastic; Love And Peace Or Else was just incredible as a live performance. Can't wait until I get to see 'em in Boston in May! [u2tours.com]

After a weekend of coding I finished the pre-alpha 0.1 release of PodSafe, a podcast management client. This little client tool will manage your subscriptions, check for new episodes of podcasts, and download new files right into iTunes. It's available only for Mac OS X. I hope to have a more stable 0.2 release within a week. Give it a try and please send feedback! I'm going for a very simple, clean interface. Too many of the other podcast clients are all cluttered or cost money. This one is free. Released under the GPL, so if you're a coder, you can help make it even better. Update 2005.03.18: v0.3 beta is available. [stealthboy.com]

2005.02.19

If you're a Science Fiction fan, you no doubt have been watching the new Battlestar Galactica series on the Sci-Fi Channel. If not, you must catch it. It is, hands down, the best science fiction show on television. The acting and production quality are just amazing for a cable network show. Sure, fans of the original BG will complain about a female Starbuck, etc, but the soul of the show is there, with so many improvements. Besides, the original series only lasted for what, 17 episodes? This new series has already been given a go for season two. Start by watching the 2003 miniseries which can be found on DVD. Then catch up with the first season! It won't disappoint. [scifi.com]

Finally there is some nice snow falling here in Northern VA; I was fearing a rather snow-bereft Winter this year. Today this allows me to take some time and finally set up a little podcast. Podcasting is a new way of distributing media content by giving anyone with a microphone and an Internet connection the power to host their own little radio show. Client apps then allow you to subscribe to various feeds and download them automatically to your iPod. Check out some more information on that and my own podcast here: [stealthboy.com]

Rumors are flying around the net about a new Mac to be announced at MacWorld Expo on January 11. The new machine would be a small form factor 1.25GHz G4 headless mac for $500. This means no monitor, but the target audience would no doubt be windows users who already have a monitor, but have an iPod and want to try out a real computer. Can't wait! update: Go check out apple.com for the new products announced today! [thinksecret.com]

U2's new album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb comes out on November 23. Even though the release is two weeks away, I managed to find a copy of it (don't worry, I've already pre-ordered it). It's a very dense record. Highlights include Miracle Drug, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, and the simple and catchy A Man And A Woman. The album is a continuation of the themes on All That You Can't Leave Behind, with a heavier guitar presence. The lyrics by Bono are wonderful; even more emotional and personal than Achtung Baby. I give the album a 9 out of 10. [u2.com]

2004.11.03

Woo-hoo! Four more years. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders; I've been pretty anxious these last few months. Oh, and I got the car back from the mechanic with the rebuilt engine and transmission. Great day all around!

2004.10.11

Dropped the car off at a local Porsche mechanic for some minor work. Just rebuilding the engine and the transmission; nothing big. I stopped by to see the work and it was amazing to see the engine all in parts. Check out the pics! The block is on an engine stand behind the cart in the first pic. [www.autosportsystems.com]

U2 have been working on their new album for about two years now, and finally have announced a title and release date: How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb is due out November 22. The new single Vertigo should be on the radio this Friday 9/24. Update: You can download the first mp3 of the single! It absolutely rocks. A nice live feel with a solid rhythm section and punk undertones. Here's the official site link: [www.htdaab.com]

Most Porschephiles like myself felt rather alienated by the release of the 1999 911. Porsche radically changed the 911, and for the worse. Water-cooled engine. Larger wheelbase. Re-done (boring) interior. Front headlights that looked like a Boxster. What were they thinking? Well, it looks like Porsche has listened to its loyal fans, and the upcoming 2005 911 looks absolutely spectacular. I haven't really desired to buy a new 911 until now. The interior and exterior incorporate classic 911 design, it comes with a huge new engine (325 hp), and the front headlights are distinctly 911. I definitely want one. [www.porsche.com]

I've always had a fascination with old video games I used to play growing up. I have a large Atari 2600 collection, for example. The ultimate expression of any vintage gaming obsession is no doubt a MAME cabinet. MAME is an emulator for old arcade games, so what you can do is build a huge arcade cabinet, put a computer in there, and voila! Vintage gaming with genuine arcade controls and style. Check here for progress. UPDATE 2004.06.06: It's done!

2004.04.26

If you're reading this note it means that you're accessing my machine after I finally switched DSL providers away from Earthlink. They stink. My new provider is Speakeasy.net, and for about the same price I got twice the speed, 4 static IP addresses, and 100 email addresses. Yes, please!

2004.04.05

Kinda got back into Star Wars after a brief break. What got me excited about the movies again was a nice widescreen DVD set of the original trilogy that I, umm, found. Perhaps I'll use this time to get a few more pieces for my vintage collection, too. Check out my various star wars pages for more information.

Ok, so it's official. I'm one of those crazy Apple fans now. They started me off slow with the iPod. But working with my new iMac has just won me over. It's a great machine and an amazing operating system. This is how a computer is supposed to work. [www.stealthboy.com]

I've been following the progress of the two Mars Exploration Rovers for quite some time now. Spirit seems to be coming back up just fine, and Opportunity is in prime position for a great geological survey. And yes, I actually stayed up all hours of the night to watch the Spirit landing. If I could have any job in the world it would be to work at NASA; those are the most brilliant and driven people around. [jpl.nasa.gov]

What would a week be without a computer rebuild? Just reinstalled from scratch my main linux box with Fedora Core 1. Seems to back to normal if you're reading this. Apart from updating my computer, this Christmas also allowed me to update my home theatre. Check out the new specs here.

Snow again! And let me check my calendar. Yes, that's right. It's still Autumn. Looks like it's going to be an excellent Winter here in the D.C. area.

2003.11.26

Finally it's starting to get cold again. I can't wait for the perfect 20-degree day with snow. Work's been busy, hence the lack of updates.

This is a sad day; Johnny Cash died this morning at the age of 71. I'm a big fan, especially of his last two albums. I highly recommend at least picking up American IV: The Man Comes Around. [johnnycash.com]

Just got an iPod. Apple sure knows how to make hardware, that's for sure. Of course the first thing I did was re-format the HD on the iPod to get it to work with Linux. Now to load 15 gigs of songs onto it...<drool/> [www.apple.com]

My MythTV box has been working quite well. If you're a Linux nut and want a TiVo without paying the monthly cost (and need yet another project to work on), I recommend MythTV. It'll turn a computer into a PVR. And the software is all free. I've put together a new theme for it in all my spare time.

It's still raining. It won't stop.

So, a lot going on. Work remains at a frantic pace. The Matrix Reloaded has opened. And it rains all the time. What is this, Pittsburgh?

The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker for the Nintendo GameCube has been taking up quite a bit of my time lately. A superb game that really shows off Nintendo's expertise and attention to detail. Still not sure if it beats Metroid Prime as the best game for the system, though. [www.zelda.com]

Calibrated my new HDTV using the Avia DVD. Now I need to acquire a sound pressure meter to set speaker levels properly. I can stop any time. Really.

Metroid Prime is the best video game ever. Period. Not much more to say. If you don't own a GameCube, this game is a reason to buy one. [www.stealthboy.com]
